Click HERE to see D.O.T. County Map The thirty-second county in order of formation, Muhlenberg County is located in west-central Kentucky. The County is bordered by McLean County (north), Ohio County (northeast), Butler County (east), Logan County (southeast), Todd County (south), Christian County (southwest), Hopkins County (west). Cities, Towns and Communities include Bremen, Central City, Drakesboro, Greenville, Powderly, South Carrollton. Muhlenberg County was formed from portions of Christian and Logan counties and was named in honor of Gen. John Peter Muhlenberg, a hero of the Revolutionary War and congressman from Pennsylvania. The county seat is GREENVILLE. The topography of Muhlenberg County is varied. The southern section of the county is somewhat rugged; the central portion of the county, extending toward its northern boundary, is more level. Over 40 percent of the county is still covered by hardwood forests, mostly of oak and hickory. The principal streams are the Green, Mud, and Pond rivers. Several Native American burial mounds have been discovered in the county. White settlers came into the Muhlenberg County area in the 1780s and 1790s, many of them soldiers in General Muhlenberg's regiment. It was soon discovered that the region was rich in coal and iron deposits. One of the first coal mines in the county was established in 1820 on a farm on the Green River. Initially this coal was sold to local blacksmiths to fire their forges. As more deposits were found near the Green River, which provided easy access to other markets such as Owensboro and Evansville, Indiana, Muhlenberg's coal industry grew. During the antebellum period, Muhlenberg County was a center of the Kentucky iron industry. In 1855 Sir Robert Alexander built the Airdrie Iron Furnace with the assistance of imported Scottish labor. Tobacco farming, especially in the county's northwest section, predominated during the 1850s. Grains and hogs were also raised. During the Civil War, Greenville was occupied by both Confederate and Union armies. On November 24, 1861, Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest and a Confederate force captured a store of Union guns and equipment in Greenville. Muhlenberg County sent 836 men to fight for the Union; the exact number of Confederate recruits from the county was not determined. Following the hardships of the war, railroads made mining and agriculture more profitable. When the Owensboro & Russellville Railroad (O&R), part of the Louisville & Nashville (now CSX Transportation) system, which transversed the county, was completed in 1882, many towns such as Bevier and Cleaton sprang up along its routes. These villages were built to accommodate people searching for jobs in the coal fields. CENTRAL CITY is at the intersection of the O&R and the Elizabethtown & Paducah. As technology advanced and mining became more profitable, the coal industry grew. The Peabody Coal Company owned and operated one of the world's largest earth-moving shovels in Muhlenberg County. About 39 percent of the land is occupied by farms, on which dark and light tobaccos, corn, and soybeans are grown; livestock and poultry are raised also. The Tennessee Valley Authority's power plant on the Green River at Paradise enhances the county's industrial potential. Lake Malone State Park provides recreational facilities as well as helping to attract tourist dollars. The population of the county was 27,537 in 1970; 32,238 in 1980; and 31,318 in 1990.    The duties of the county clerk are numerous and varied, falling into the general categories of clerical duties of the fiscal court, issuing and registering, recording and keeping records of various legal instruments, election duties, tax duties, transfers, and titling, and issuance of marriage licenses and much more. One of the most important responsibilities of the County Clerk's office is the recording of land records. In Person:  You can stop in the office at 275 E. Main St. in Frankfort and obtain a certified copy of a birth, death, marriage or divorce certificate by completing an application form between the hours of 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. EST, Monday-Friday.  There is approximately a one-hour wait to receive the certificate.

By Mail:  Mail a check or money order (no cash) payable to the "Kentucky State Treasurer" along with the necessary information to the following address:  Office of Vital Statistics, 275 E. Main St.  1E-A, Frankfort, KY 40621.  Please include return address on envelope and application form.
Processing Time:  Please allow up to approximately 30 working days for processing of all type of certificates when ordered through the mail. 
Birth Records:  Expect longer delays during peak request periods from May through September.  You should request certified copies of your birth certificate early enough to avoid delays if you are planning retirement, sporting events for the children, travel/passports, children entering school for the first time, etc.

  Countywide Records: Federal Population Schedules that exist for Muhlenberg County, Kentucky are 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890 (fragment, see below), 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. Earlier U.S. censuses for Kentucky were destroyed, but published tax lists serve as a replacements for the lost 1790 and 1800 censuses. Other Federal Schedules to look at when researching your family tree in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky are Industry and Agriculture Schedules availible for the years 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880.    One of the most valuable sources for early Kentucky until 1892 is its tax records. Most counties have yearly tax records from the date of organization. Some early tax schedules list watercourse, value and acreage of real estate, men over twenty-one, young men between sixteen and twenty-one, slaves, and horses. Extant county tax schedules from the date of organization of the county through 1892 have been microfilmed for most counties and are available from the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives and the FHL. Numerous original tax records from 1892 are available at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. The Kentucky Historical Society has tax records to 1875.
  Kentucky tax lists are arranged by county and date. Within the counties, residents within its districts are grouped together and names usually arranged under the beginning letter of the surname, although these are not in strict alphabetical order. Some early tax records have been published and are available in research libraries.

Church membership of early Kentuckians include Baptist, Church of Christ, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic. Some church records were published, others were microfilmed, some are housed in church repositories, but many remain in the local church. Church records and histories may be found in periodicals pertaining to Kentucky. Repositories include the DAR Library, the FHL, Kentucky Historical Society, University of Kentucky Library, and Filson Club Library.

Many collections of cemetery records are available for Kentucky. In 1977 the Kentucky Historical Society began computerizing extant cemetery records for the state. Cemetery tombstone transcriptions are included in the Ardery collection. Kentucky regional libraries and some other large genealogical libraries outside the state have collections of Kentucky cemetery transcriptions. In addition, publications pertaining to Kentucky and Kentuckians frequently contain cemetery records for the state.
